Tamaraws plant trees for ecological stability

Updated: Aug 8

Recognizing trees' critical role in ecological stability, Far Eastern University (FEU) participated in this year’s Arbor Day tree planting activity organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) at La Mesa Eco Park.   There were 50 reserved slots for volunteers from the FEU community, including administrators from Student Development together with Rondell Gascon, faculty, employees, and students.

Tree planting, a central activity of Arbor Day, directly supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals. It contributes to Good Health and Well-being by improving air quality and providing shade, which can reduce heat-related illnesses. Trees play a crucial role in Clean Water and Sanitation by filtering pollutants and reducing soil erosion, ensuring cleaner water sources. They are vital for Sustainable Cities and Communities, offering green spaces that enhance urban living. Through carbon sequestration, tree planting is a key strategy in Climate Action, mitigating the effects of climate change. Arbor Day fosters Partnership for the Goals by bringing together communities, organizations, and governments in a collective effort toward a sustainable future.

This kind of venture reflects a broader commitment to these goals, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving ecological stability. The Tamaraw Tree Planting Activity is a testament to the power of community and partnership in driving sustainable development and protecting the environment for future generations.

Arbor Day, named from the Latin word for tree, varies by country depending on their planting seasons. In the Philippines, it is celebrated on June 25th, following the declaration made by the government in 2012 (RA 10176 or Arbor Day Act). This initiative is among the many efforts by the government to protect the environment and promote a healthy biotic community.
