Seoul, South Korea –Nurses must recognize and manage the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) through evidence-based intervention aimed at optimizing patient comfort and facilitating adaptation, said Dr. Moira Uy, dean of the Institute of Nursing (IN) in Far Eastern University (FEU). For this recommendation, Uy was given the “Best Oral Presentation Award” at the 15th International Nursing Conference and 28th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars last Feb. 13 and 14.

Uy’s study introduces an Adaptive Coping Model specifically designed for adults with RA, advancing nursing models that reinforce patient experiences and promote positive health outcomes.
“By integrating this model into clinical practice, nurses will be empowered to adopt a holistic approach in patient care, ensuring that their interventions not only address physical symptoms but also enhance overall well-being. The research affirms that adaptation is a result of multiple interacting factors and that the nurse-patient relationship is a key determinant in achieving successful patient outcomes,” said Uy.
The study’s findings present invaluable learning opportunities for nursing students and faculty at FEU. Integrating the Adaptive Coping Model into the nursing curriculum will enhance students' understanding of holistic patient care and equip them with the skills necessary to implement adaptive coping strategies in real-world clinical settings.
This recognition also serves as an inspiration to aspiring nursing researchers, proving that they are fully capable of developing nursing models that contribute to healthcare advancements. Faculty members can also incorporate these research findings into their teaching methodologies, enriching the delivery of nursing education.
Beyond the academic setting, “A Model of Adaptive Coping among Adults with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Mixed Method Study” highlights the role of nurses in non-pharmacologic symptom management within clinical and community-based settings. The implementation of evidence-based health education strategies will empower communities, providing individuals with accessible options for home-based and community-based care services.
