Far Eastern University (FEU) hosted the third session of its Teaching Assistants Scholarship Training Program last Nov. 5 at the Admissions Building in Manila. The workshop focused on cultivating critical thinking, effective communication, and the avoidance of bias and misinterpretation.
The session emphasized the importance of understanding and articulating ideas clearly, encouraging both students and facilitators to enhance their ability to probe, ask meaningful questions, and think analytically. Participants were encouraged to develop a sense of humility, healthy skepticism, and an appreciation for logical reasoning—all critical skills in today’s fast-paced and information-rich world.

Mark Ian Magallano, a faculty member from the Institute of Education and the workshop facilitator, underscored the relevance of teaching critical thinking skills in response to the question, “Why is it important for teachers to help their students develop critical thinking capabilities?”
“Critical thinking is an essential skill that can be applied across all disciplines. It empowers students to generate novel ways of thinking, become self-directed learners, and draw meaningful conclusions,” said Magallano. “Especially in the age of disinformation, misinformation, and generative AI, critical thinking enables students to assess information carefully. Equipping our learners with this skill prepares them to effectively learn, relearn, and unlearn information, making them adaptable to the demands and challenges of the changing landscape of education and information.”
The teachers were also encouraged to cultivate curiosity and inquisitiveness, qualities that not only enhance learning but also foster a proactive approach to navigating and questioning the information they encounter.
The TA Scholarship Training Program continues to play an essential role in developing educators equipped with the skills necessary to shape the next generation of critical thinkers and communicators.
