CTL touts ‘speculation to practice’

Room 403 of the Admissions Building of Far Eastern University became the hub of academic discourse and innovation as it hosted the final training and workshop for faculty members under the Teacher Scholarship Program recently. The workshop revolved around translating “speculation to practice” in modern education, where Achilles Alfred Ferranco, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, emphasized the importance of bridging the gaps between traditional knowledge and modern science. He also highlighted how varied academic backgrounds and foundational knowledge levels among students often challenge educators.

Key discussions during the workshop touched on critical topics such as: the balance between insights and facts, urging educators to explore “debatable, defensible, deep, and diveable” insights to develop critical thinking among students; students’ pre-existing knowledge and its role in shaping deeper understanding and active learning; techniques to promote competence development and metacognition, ensuring students are not just absorbing information but actively participating in the learning process; strategies to encourage student participation for a more engaging and interactive classroom environment. One of the session’s highlights was the emphasis on leveraging students’ previous knowledge to foster active learning, transforming traditional teacher-centered methods into dynamic and collaborative educational experiences. Ferranco encouraged faculty members to shift their focus from merely transmitting facts to facilitating insight-driven discussions that challenge students to think critically and apply what they learn in meaningful ways.
