CTL revisits flipped classroom methodology for IE faculty

Updated: Mar 7

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) recently collaborated with the Institute of Education (IE) faculty to refresh themselves on the Flipped Classroom Approach. The session aimed to update faculty members with innovative teaching strategies in preparation for blended learning programs.

The workshop was organized in response to a request from IE dean Aisa Arlos, with nearly 80 faculty members in attendance. It was strategically scheduled during the semester’s first activity period to maximize participation. The session built upon CTL’s ongoing initiatives, which include customized workshops with online components, similar to past training programs such as the Rizal Online Course.

The workshop followed the structure of a Flipped Classroom, allowing faculty members to experience firsthand what their students would go through in such a setup. Participants were assigned as students in Canvas, where they completed pre-class activities a week before the face-to-face session. This simulation provided valuable insights, particularly for faculty members who had never experienced learning in an online environment.

During the in-class discussions, participants engaged in lively exchanges, sharing their perspectives on Independent Learning Weeks, for which the Flipped Classroom training served as preparation. The session concluded with post-class reflections, where faculty members were encouraged to assess their teaching strategies and consider adjustments for the upcoming independent learning periods.

As the university continues to evolve its academic programs, CTL and the General Education department remain committed to updating their training content to align with institutional changes. This workshop marks another step in ensuring faculty members are well-equipped to implement student-centered and technology-enhanced learning approaches in their courses.
