Over 130 Far Eastern University (FEU) graduate students participated in their general assembly (GA) and seminar to be mindful of policies on retention, research, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
During the assembly, certain guidelines were laid out by the graduate school department chairpersons, including the provisions outlined in CHED Memorandum Order No. 15, series of 2019, on publication commitments, student retention policies, penalty courses, clearance procedures, re-defense protocols, and returning students. Additionally, conference support funding and thesis and dissertation defense fees were addressed.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nafiseh Zarei reaffirmed the opportunities available through Sikhay, the official publication of the university’s Office of the Graduate Studies (OGS). She emphasized the chance of presenting academic work in the annual Graduate Studies Interdepartmental Colloquium.
Given the imminent integration of AI in academia and research, director for University Research Ethics Joycelyn Filoteo gave an overview of recent developments, policy updates, and changes related to the FEU Ethics Review Board.
Following the assembly, graduate students proceeded to their respective departments for a kumustahan session, facilitated by their chairpersons and coordinators.
In the afternoon, the OGS hosted the Transforming Research Into Publication Seminar, featuring Dr. Mary Catherine Thomas as the keynote speaker. Thomas spoke about ethics in research, as well as reviewing basic examples of citations and referencing in APA 7. She illustrated the ethical use of online citation generators, applications for editing, and updates on accessing and using EBSCOhost, JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Science Direct.
“It remains your responsibility to verify the accuracy of the information, and the citations and references you get from online sources. Always double-check,” said Thomas.
The bi-annual GA and orientation was conducted last Feb. 1 at the University Conference Center, Ground Floor, Arts Building, FEU-Manila.
